Camp

Each summer, children who have been a part of BBBS of Hanover & District for one year, are eligible to apply for a subsidy from the agency to attend summer camp.  In return for the $200.00 the family receives towards their camp fees, we ask that the family volunteer their time for fund raisers, special events or phoning.

Camp McGovern, is situated just outside of Hanover.   Many of our children attend here and as well, have gone on to be LITs (Leader in Training),  and CITs (counselor in training)

Check out below, some of our kid's and parent's thoughts on camp this past summer!

Camp was really good.  The best part of camp was taking pictures.  I liked the bow and arrows.
Every day there were new targets and I got to use them.  I like the guys who stayed in my cabin - Ghost
and Swish."   (Danniel, 7 yrs old)

“Camp was cool.  I liked the girls in my cabin.  They were nice.  Most of them lived in Kitchener.
We did lots of different activities.  Running, archery, art and scrap booking.  We made jewellery too.
I think the best part about camp was all the nice people. -  Oh, and the good food.”  (Crystal , 11 yrs old)

“Camp was great!  We did lots of different things - canoeing, swimming, archery and crafts.  Every
morning we would go for the polar bear dip.  That was at 7 in the morning!  The leaders were really nice
and I made lots of friends.  I want to go back next year.”  (Tamara  9 yrs old)

“ Camp was good. .  I went on the ropes course, but hey hurt my feet.  The best part was that this year,
there was a dunk tank.  It was great - they dunked the counselors.  Ghost was there again - he was one of
my counselors.  He was nice.  The food was good too.  I’m glad I went to camp.”
(Thomas, 14 yrs old)

"Camp was a lot of fun.  I made a bunch of friends.  I met a lot of new people.  We did canoeing, sports,
arts and crafts and swimming.  Camp was really good."  (Sydney, 10 yrs old)

“There were two parts of camp that were my favourites -  I liked the dance at the end of the week, and the
campfire play.  In the play, I was the celebrity Pinocchio - I could talk just like him!  We did lots of things at
camp - sports like  basketball, volleyball and  soccer.  I did the ropes course too.”   (Marc, 13 yrs old)

“I had a fun time.  There were horses.  There were some new people that I met...new friends.  Some came
from a long way...from Toronto.  The best part of camp was riding on the horses and swimming in the pool.”
Michaela, 10 yrs old

 A Parent’s Perspective

“The kids just returned from camp and had a great time.   I’m sure that’s all I will hear about for the next
few weeks.  Sydney got very close to her counselors and I’m assuming they became close to her as one
cried when I took her away.  They can’t wait until next year.  They want to thank you for sending them to
camp this year.”  (Mom,  Crystal)

 A Parent’s Perspective

"It was good for him to experience something new- to be without me.  He missed everyone but that's ok.
It was very hard on me, but I know it was right for him.  He learned new things and met new people."
(Mom, Margaret)

 A Parent’s Perspective

"I can't thank you enough.  Camp was so good for Tamara.  She did really well and had such a good time.
I called Monday and they said she was doing really well.  I called again Wed. and they said the same
thing.  She had a little wee bit of homesickness on Friday but only for a few minutes.  She has talked
non-stop about going back to camp.  It just did her the world of good.  The staff told me that Tamara was
a great camper and they had no problems with her at all. Thank you so much for this opportunity."
(Mom, Debra)

A Parent’s Perspective

“Thomas did wonderfully at camp.  He had a really good worker.  My parents picked him up from camp so
I didn’t get a chance to talk to the counselors.  There were no calls home though, and he said he had a
 really good time.”  (Mom, Brandie)
